An Introduction to Estonian Knitting with Angharad Thomas
24 March, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
£50Bands, braids and peasants thumbs: This masterclass for curious knitters explores the fascinating world of Estonian knitting history and techniques. Join textiles historian and Estonia-phile, Angharad Thomas for her new Baltic knitting adventure.
The class will include an introduction to the background and traditions of Estonian knitting and a chance to learn the following techniques:
- Estonian cast on
- Two colour braid
- Estonian decorative band
- Two colour in the round stranded knitting
- Peasant thumb
You will have the chance to swatch and then cast on for an accessory, and plan out a project to take away with you.
You will need
- Three balls of Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper Weight in a dark colour, a light colour and a highlight colour. Estonian knitting can include all sorts of colours so you can be as experimental or habitual as you like, but if you’re looking for some guidance Angharad suggests white or ecru/ navy or black and red as the highlight for a ‘traditional’ looking piece.
- A set of double pointed needles or two 60cm circulars, or one 80cm circular (if you are comfortable to knit with a magic loop). Estonians always knit using sets of 5.
Knitting Skills
The class is suitable for confident knit-and-purlers, familiar with small-circumference knitting in the round on either DPNs, magic loop or 2 circulars.
Yarn and needles can be purchased from the shop with a 10% participant’s discount.
