About the Teacher
Shelley trained as a couture milliner and ran her own hat making studio within the iconic Hornsey Town Hall in North London. During this peiod she became increasingly concerned about the impact that the fashion industry has on the planet. During the C19 pandemic her work took more of a crafting direction as she drew on a lifetime’s worth of knowledge of cutting, blocking, dyeing, altering and embroidering. This textile know-how ultimately led to the creation of her brand, Sewingsmith.
Her approach to mending is rooted in the Japanese art of Kintsugi, which translates as “golden joinery”. This technique not only restores the fractured pieces to their former glory but also elevates them. By applying an understanding of colour and pattern, she aims to restore clothing and transform them into treasured items with stories to tell.
