Hilja Mitts Kit and KAL
The Hilja Mitts Kit contains the yarn and pattern you need to make Aleks Byrd’s beautiful Estonian inspired mittens, as well as an entry into the Hilja Knit-a-long.
The main colour background uses Garthenor Number 2: a soft and characterful organic shetland wool which carries all the heathered shades of the undyed fleece. The 2 shades for the motif use Garthenor Preseli, a luxuriously smooth blend of organic Romney and Polwarth, beautifully overdyed on the heathered base. Each kit comes in its own Wild and Woolly project bag.
Aleks’ design is named after her Estonian grandmother, and uses the traditional Roosimine technique to create an embroidered-like motif, which is typical of the fine stitch designs that have been decorating knitwear in the region for generations.
The pattern is suitable for confident knit-and-purlers, who are familiar with knitting small circumferences in the round.
As well as the yarn included in the kit, you will also need 3mm circular needles or DPNs, depending on your preferred small circumference knitting method.
As soon as you order your kit you will be invited to join iKnit7’s Hilja KAL Facebook Group. All the Hilja KAL knitters are warmly encouraged to share stories and pictures of their progress and ask for advice if they need that. Aleks and the rest of the IKnit7 team will be on hand to help out in any way we can.
We’ll be getting started with a Virtual Cast On Party on 19 February at 8pm, and Aleks will do a Facebook Live Video on Monday 22nd February to explain more about the Roosimine technique.
And lastly we’ll round everything off with a celebratory Hilja mitts grand finale virtual Knit Night on Friday March 5th
