Sweater For Less

Cost of living, feeling the pinch, straightened times. Whatever you want to call it, there’s a lot of us feeling it right now. It can be stressful, sometimes awkward, and all the things which we know knitting should be able to relieve – but if you’re priced out of the knitting, that doesn’t work so well.

There are no easy answers here, but there are some breathing spaces around this tangle. Good yarn doesn’t have to break the bank and low-cost options don’t need to feel like a Plan B.

Sweater For Less

Yarn

Here are 6 of our favourite yarns, where a sweater quantity (roughly estimated as enough to make a long sleeved top for an actual bust measurement of +/- 45″) has a total cost of less than £50

The Stash Depot

So much for yarn on a £50 budget.  The Wild and Woolly Stash Depot is a drawer of yarn that costs just £2 per ball. It’s been a part of the shop since we opened up in 2014 and the price of the yarn in it has never changed. It’s all about getting wool that knitters are not knitting with, out from under-bed boxes, the cupboard under the stairs or the loft, and into the hands of knitters who’d like to knit with it. You never know what gems you’ll find in the Stash Depot, but it’s always worth a good rummage.

Yarn Forward

Yarn Forward tokens are similar to book tokens. You can use them to help pay for your yarn, tools and classes.  The difference is that knitters buy them to support each other. When someone buys a Yarn Forward token, they choose the amount and pin it to the board. It stays there for any knitter who could do with some help towards their supplies. You don’t need to ask or explain. You just help yourself to a token if you need one.

Sweater Club Scholarship

If you’re a knitter on low/no income and would like the structured support of a 5 week course to help you start and finish knitting a sweater, then you can apply for a fully funded place on our Sweater Club with our Sweater Club Scholarship programme.
