Knitting Stories

Overheard in the Woolshop

5 and a bit weeks to go and it’s getting p r e t t y busy in the wool shop. More knitters means more stories and a fresh crop of lovely new Overheards..

‘It’s for my cousin. She said she wanted a scarf. But now it’s finished she says it needs to be a bit more blingy. I thought I’d add some pink tassels… Wait! OMG what about that gold lurex. It’s perfect. I’m having it.

‘I’ve tried. I really have. I spent the whole evening knitting it. I just can’t get there. The wool is too soft and the needles are too big. I think I finally know what sort of knitter I am.

Run it by me one more time. M1R is about lifting back to front and then in through the back? No, I mean front, or is it front to back. Oh bollocks. I’m all in a muddle again. Does it really matter?

I’m not being funny or anything but is it ok to smell the yarn? My friend said it would be and that you wouldn’t think it’s weird if I asked. She came the other day and told me about this wool that you’ve got which still smells like the sheep. She couldn’t stop talking about it. … Oh yes, I think you’re right it must be this one… That’s fine, you can see to that other lady now. I’m just going to sit here with the wool for a while.

It’s for a secret Santa. I know he’s going to really love it and he’s not supposed to know it’s from me, but he definitely will because it’s knitted and no one else knits. And I sort of want him to know actually.

[On mobile phone: ] ‘I’m really sorry I think I might have got a bug and I’m not going to be able to come tonight.
[To me:] ‘That’s the evening cleared – now I can get on with my new project – yippee!!

I got my diagnosis a few months ago and I’ve started the treatment now. I don’t have the same energy anymore. But I think I can do this. My hands can do this.

That thing you said about it being like cashmere. It actually is. There’s a lady who said they have these bandanas in Liberty. But mine cost £9.50, and theirs are about a billion times more expensive and not as nice.’

So who are all those people at the table?’
‘They sort of just knit and get their knitting fixed I think. I don’t really know who they are. But they seem very friendly. I told you it wasn’t like a normal wool shop.
