Hebridean & Cheviot Blend

Description

Spun from a blend of the fleece of Cheviot and Hebridean sheep descended from the flocks who first crossed the Sound of Harris on Viking 'Birlinn' long boats over a thousand years ago, this is a lustrous and generous yarn. It is labelled as a 4ply, but the loose 2ply twist and semi-worsted spin, gives it enough plumpness to knit a closed stitch fabric at a sport-ish gauge of 23 stitches to 10cm. Equally, its lightness means you can easily tighten up and work at a more standard 25-27 stitch 4ply gauge.

The colours are created from organic GOTS certified dyes to make a colour pallette which combines beautifully with the undyed natural shades of the sheep.
Today Meg Rodger's yarn is made in small batches from fleece that she collects from her own flock and those of nearby crofts on the island of Berneray in North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. The wool has become part of an important way of helping to sustain the island's rare breed flocks and support theĀ  Outer Hebridean crofters' traditional way of farming which that works with the fragile island ecology.
