Abenaia yarn comes from the fleece of black and white sheep raised in the woods of São Mamede Natural Park (Marvão, Portugal). By using local Portuguese merino wool, the Abenaia project is creating new opportunities for shepherds by giving them a more sustainable income, and ensuring that the sheep can roam freely without harmful mulesing treatments.
This latest batch of Abenaia merino yarn has been woollen spun at a local mill, with no superwash, bleach or silicone based softeners. It has a 2 ply construction. The woollen spinning leaves the yarn airy and plumper than you might expect of a 4ply. This means you could choose to use the yarn at a sport weight gauge, to get more out of the 180m yardage, and create lighter weight fabric. The plying is loose-ish and slightly uneven without any of the roughness you associate with such characterful yarn.
Hand wash with wool wash and dry flat away from direct sun light.
