Learn the Ladderback Jacquard Technique

Discover a new way to manage the floats of your colourwork knitting which can transform the way you work repeating patterns – and how you feel about tackling them!

Ladderback Jacquard is a specialised knitting technique that manages long floats in stranded colorwork by transforming them into secure, vertical “ladders” of stitches on the reverse side. Unlike trapping or catching floats, this method creates a web on the wrong side of your fabric which prevents snagging, maintains elastic tension, and keeps long floats from showing through on the front. This makes Ladderback Jacquard an ideal technique for knitting wide colour blocks like big fish or giant blooms, where there are more than 5 stitches and the floats would otherwise be too long.

In this 3 hour class, knitting analyst and techniques expert, Wendy Peterson (aka Yarnsub.com), will teach you how to master the Ladderback Jaquard Technique. You will learn how to:

  • analyse colourwork charts to understand when Ladderback Jacquard is appropriate.
  • identify where to place your ladder stitches in your charted pattern
  • create, continue and finish ladder stitches

During the class you will work on Wendy’s Tulip wrist warmer pattern. You will have the option to cast off a completed wrist warmer at the end of the class or continue knitting it into a fingerless mitten with an extended colourwork motif.
