Badana is a light but very warm single-ply that holds a special appeal for lovers of wooly, rustic yarns. Similar to the better known Icelandic Lett Lopi wool, it works best for outer-layer knitwear.

Badana was borne of Rosa Pomar’s relentless mission to promote the wool of neglected endangered Portuguese native breed sheep. The Churra Badana sheep are from the Bragança region of northeast Portugal. Badana wool was once used locally for weaving blankets and other textiles but fell out of favour with the development of modern synthetic fibres, so that today there is almost no demand for it. Rosa’s work in collecting the fleeces and having them spun into yarn, helps  to support the farmers, shepherds, their sheep, and protects the land on which they live.
