We have a particular soft spot for the family of De Rerum Natura yarns with its impressive and traceable heritage and production story. Gilliatt is their worsted weight yarn and has a 3 ply, rounded structure making it perfect for showing off cables, lace or miles of plump stocking stitch. Because it is woollen spun and contains a lot of trapped air, it has a surprisingly generous meterage for its weight and an unexpectedly versatile performance in terms of gauge. It’s just as comfortable being knit with patterns that specify a 20 stitch DK gauge as 17-18 stitch worsteds. This is a works-on-everything joy-to-knit-with yarn for garments and accessories alike.

Gilliatt is spun from white Maco merinos descended from the Merino D’arles and Merino Rambouillet breeds. They are raised in the Alps of Haute-Provence. For all but the palest shades, the wool is blended with fleece from black merinos from the Creuse which when overdyed gives the yarns a sophisticated tonal movement. The fleece is locally carded and spun using traditional techniques and equipment at the Rougnat spinning mill, minimising production miles.

Description

Gilliatt is a woollen-spun yarn from a new breed of white maco merinos descended from the Merino D’arles and Merino Rambouillet breeds. They are raised in the Alps of Haute-Provence, and their wool is blended with fleece from black merinos recently introduced in the Creuse.

The fleece of these Maco Merinos is carded and spun using traditional techniques and equipment at the Rougnat spinning mill, creating the soft and generous balls of Gilliatt and Ulysse wool.

The loftiness of the yarn makes it very versatile in terms of stitch gauge. Change your needle size to vary the gauge as follows (all numbers are approximate):

 19 sts x 26 rows, with 4 mm needles

 18 sts x 25 rows, with 4,5 mm needles

 17 sts x 24 rows, with 5 mm needles

This versatility with gauge makes it an ideal substitute for US worsted weight yarns such as Brooklyn Tweed’s Shelter
