Whilst most of the yarn in the shop is made from wool, there is a warm and sunny place in our hearts for Kalinka Linen. This 4ply/sport weight Swedish yarn is made from 100% linen in a vivd array of colours from vibrant jewel shades to soft pastels which all have a very attractive glow due to the slightly reflective surface of the linen.
Whilst linen has no stretch, so may not be as easy on the hands as wool, its lightness and suppleness make it a comfortable summer yarn for shawls, lightweight cardigans, summer t-shirts and vest tops.
In the first instance the yarn will feel crisp and even slightly stiff in the skein. This changes as you break it in by winding, knitting, washing and wearing it. So over time knitted linen will become softer and softer. A cool linen t-shirt top can easily become a summer staple in any wardrobe due to its ease of care and wearability.
We recommend washing on a cold or normal machine cycle followed by agressive blocking or pressing with a hot iron, as this will have a transformational affect on irregular stitches and fit.
Kalinka is made from Belgium linen spun into yarn in Sweden by Holma Helsingland.
