Knit your own summer

Socks on the beach, cables in the glow of a head torch by a camp fire, zoning out with rounds of plain knitting under a tree by the paddling pool.. summer can be the perfect knitting season.

By swapping out wool in favour of cotton, linen or silk, and working on light weight loose-gauge t-shirts instead of warm and cosy sweaters, knitting can start to have an altogether different appeal. Now add in the time and space you have in the summer on account of lazy afternoons and long evenings, far away trips and hours to while away on trains, and all that’s left, is to work out what you want to make and what you’ll knit it in.

Yarn

Our emphasis here is on the plantier, less insulating fibres – the ones that are more about shade than warmth. Knitting with these yarns will feel a little different from working with wool – the yarns have less ‘give’ in them, but with time your hot hands will adjust and thank you for the coolness of the fibre they’re holding.

Don’t be alarmed if your stitches initially look less even than usual – the lack of ‘loft’ in summer yarns can be less forgiving with small changes in the tension of odd stitches. These kinds of inconsistencies will largely iron (yes! You can iron your summer knits!) or block out when you’re done.

Books

And the really great news is that more and more talented knitwear designers are also on board with summer knitting, so the choice of patterns has never been better.
