..and Starting new things
so here’s handy little quiz to help you work out which way to go:
There’s a storm cloud hovering above the flats on the other side of the road. Rain is forecast for most the rest of the week, and it was decidedly nippy when you left home this morning without any socks on. Plus you’ve noticed that evenings are starting earlier and you know it’s a matter of time before they begin bumping into your journey home from work.
How do you feel?
A) Devastated. It feels like only last week that the kids broke up for the summer. How can it be over already? And you saw someone wearing a hand-knitted stripey bandana on the train this morning. That can’t be right (although it was very cute). But it’s only September!
B) Boom -Totally ready for it! The summer was great but it’s been a long, hot one, so you’re feeling ready to get back on board with that knitting book you got given last year – except maybe this time you’ll choose a new pattern from the garments chapter. The scarf was fun but perhaps it’s time for something more challenging?
C) Thank goodness for that! If it would only get just a little bit cooler, then you could wear the sweater you just finished on the beach while everyone else was swimming. You’ve got a ravelry queue as long as a Doctor Who scarf to attend to. Oh and then there’s that beautiful hand-dyed Zip yarn that’s been calling you ever since you bought it on impulse last spring, and it’s probably a good time to start planning who needs what knitting for Christmas.
You’re invited to Yara’s birthday thing. It’s a big one and she was so nice to you when you went through all that stuff last year. So you’ve gone to the beautiful knitwear shop she loves to get her a present. You want it to be special.
Do You..
A) Browse the hats and scarves, trying to find something she’ll like, that won’t blow your budget too much, and start to feel really envious of your knitting friend who’s always wearing scarves like these which she’s made herself. If only you knew how to to knit. You know Yara would love it if even more if you made it yourself.
B) Totally forget what you’re there for, and start wondering if you could knit yourself a sweater like the one on the mannekin. You’re sure you’ve seen something similar on Ravelry. Perhaps this is the year to move on from hats and scarves.
C) Go through everything in the shop and think, very nice but not as nice as what I can make myself and much more expensive. You leave empty handed and head to the wool shop instead. You see a book about intarsia colourwork and are immediately distracted by an overwhelming urge to learn a new technique.
There’s a high pressure deadline that’s looming at work. In an effort to take your mind off it when you get home in the evening, you curl up on the sofa to watch a new Scandi crime drama.
Are you…
A) Distracted? You can’t quite let go of that nagging feeling of everything that you’ve got to get done tomorrow. The plot is unfolding on the screen but you’re not keeping up. You’re feeling twitchy. You know it’s a bad idea to get your laptop out, and wish you had something you could do with your hands that could ground you a bit more.
B) Feeling immediately drawn to the main detective character on account of her marvellous hand knitted sweater, then reach for your phone to look her up on Instagram, just as she kicks off her boots, to reveal even nicer hand knitted socks. You need to find out if these patterns are available on Ravelry. You make up your mind to amp up your knitting skills so you can get this look.
C) Wondering about the detective’s side-kick, and whether their mittens have been made using that thrumming technique you heard about last year. They look ever so warm. Maybe those would be a good idea for Uncle Nigel’s present?
